CT Political Activist Group Contacting All Connecticut Legislators and 2010 Candidates to Declare for the Bill of Federalism

The Salisbury, CT political activist group Distressed Patriots for America is contacting all Connecticut legislators and 2010 legislative candidates to request they publicly endorse the Bill of Federalism. Distressed Patriots believes politicians who won’t be part of the solution remain the problem and should explain their position to the voters.

Distressed Patriots believe, as do innumerable constitutional scholars and lawyers across America, that decades of constant encroachment by the federal government on the sovereignty of individuals and states, abetted by certain activist judges at all levels of the judicial system, including the Supreme Court, have dangerously eroded the foundation of America's constitutional republic.

The Bill of Federalism was drafted by Professor Randy Barnett, a professor of constitutional law at Georgetown University and author of "Restoring the Lost Constitution: The Presumption of Liberty." According to Prof. Barnett, "This proposed amendment is entirely consistent with the original meaning of the Constitution and merely clarifies the boundary between Federal and State powers, and reaffirms the power of courts to police this boundary and protect individual liberty. States have nothing to lose and everything to gain by making this Federalism Amendment the focus of their resistance to the shrinking of their reserved powers and infringements upon the rights retained by the people."

As the Constitution State, Distressed Patriots wants Connecticut to take the lead in exercising the power given them under Article V of the Constitution to petition Congress in a coalition of States meeting the minimum required number to call for such a convention, to propose a "Federalism Amendment" to the U.S. Constitution.

The state constitutional amendment process has never been used and would be historic, but America is laboring through historic and traumatic times. The fact that more than 30 states legislatures across America have pursued symbolic Sovereignty Bills bespeaks to a new era where the States could collectively force the federal government to stop the maddening profligacy of endless taxing and waste, and thereby adjure to the U.S. Constitution.

At the close of the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked, "What kind of government have you given us, Dr. Franklin?" He replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."

According to Distressed Patriot founder Chris Janelli, "Franklin’s words were prophetic. Americans can no longer stand idle as the United States of America, the oldest constitutional republic in the world, is abandoned by an administration and imperial Congress intent on nationalization and near incomprehensible - and growing - national debt. Our professional politicians with their benefits, perks and lifestyle of spending other people’s money are simply out of touch with the realities of the financial burden placed on American business and the dwindling number of American tax payers."

"The people and states remain the last constitutional bulwark to stopping and reigning in the federal government and saving America as a constitutional republic. While individuals often feel powerless against the federal government, they hold potentially enormous power through their state if they can force it to act in concert with other states. Not since the American Revolution has the call to individuals to stand up for their sovereignty as citizen soldiers been so clear. This really is about saving our country for future generations."
